NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative and the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives are accepting applications from Northern Virginia high school seniors for higher-education scholarships.

NOVEC’s Dollars for Scholars Program
The NOVEC Dollars for Scholars selection committees will award $1,500 scholarships to high school students in each county where NOVEC provides electric service. One student in each public school system in Fauquier and Stafford counties and the City of Manassas Park will receive a scholarship. Because of the large number of NOVEC customers who live in Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties, two students in each of these counties will receive scholarships. The selection committees will award another $1,500 scholarship to a student in NOVEC’s service territory who either attends private school or is home-schooled.

The committees will award the $1,500 J. Manley Garber Scholarship to the overall top student. The winner of this scholarship will receive a total of $3,000.

Each county’s selection committee will look for students who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, community service, work experience, and leadership skills.

A scholarship applicant must:

  1. Be a college-bound high school senior whose parents or guardians currently receive electric service from NOVEC
  2. Have at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and submit an official transcript that includes first-semester grades
  3. Submit Student Achievement Test (SAT) scores
  4. Demonstrate a wide range of participation and leadership in extracurricular activities, community service and/or work experience
  5. Submit two letters of recommendation – one from a high school official, such as a teacher or counselor, and one from a community member
  6. Submit a 400-word typed essay – directions are included with the application form

A student may download the Dollars for Scholars application by going to www.novec.com/Community/scholarships.cfm or by contacting Donna Snellings at: dsnellings@novec.com, 703-392-1511, or toll free 1-888-335-0500, ext 1511.

Students should mail their completed applications to: Donna Snellings, NOVEC, P.O. Box 2710, Manassas, VA 20108, or hand deliver them to a NOVEC office no later than April 1, 2011. Failure to submit a complete package by the deadline will disqualify a student from consideration.

NOVEC representatives will present scholarships at pre-graduation ceremonies at the schools of selected students. The August edition of Cooperative Living magazine and NOVEC’s website will list the names of all scholarship recipients.

VMDAEC Scholarships
High school seniors whose parents or guardians are customer-owners of NOVEC are eligible to apply for post-high school educational institution scholarships awarded by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives Educational Scholarship Foundation.

The foundation will award $500 and $1,000 scholarships to students who have been selected based on financial need, academic achievement, and community involvement. VMDAEC will send scholarship funds directly to a recipient’s chosen educational institution for help with tuition, fees, and books.

Applications are available at www.co-opliving.com/community/scholarship.htm or by mail: VMDAEC Scholarships, P.O. Box 2340, Glen Allen, VA, 23058-2340. A completed application and all attachments must be received in the VMDAEC office no later than Friday, April 15, 2011.
