NORTHERN VIRGINIA – The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative recently received seven Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX) from Communications Concepts, Inc. and five Spotlight on Excellence awards from the Council of Rural Electric Communicators and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. The awards recognize overall communications excellence in writing, graphic design, electronic media, and public service campaigns.
“NOVEC’s Public Relations’ goal is to communicate effectively to Co-op customer-owners, the media, and the general public,” said Mike Curtis, vice president, Public Relations. “These awards indicate that our team is working hard to reach this goal. I’m very proud of them.”
APEX Award
APEX winners came from a pool of more than 3,300 entries from around the world. Winners include Ford Motor Company, Lockheed Martin, Vanguard Group, and Walt Disney Company.

Spotlight on Excellence Awards
Electric cooperative communicators and marketing professionals submitted more than 800 entries to the Spotlight on Excellence contest. Faculty members from schools of journalism at the University of Missouri – Columbia, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, and University of South Carolina judged the entries.
“The judges noted that electric cooperatives are being challenged to communicate to the people they serve in more ways than ever before,” said Maggie Tilley, administrator of Spotlight on Excellence. “Printed newsletters, news releases, websites, social media, videos, and information in bills are all more important than ever to keep members updated.”

The Council of Rural Electric Communicators, organized in 1982, seeks to advance the recognition, education, and professionalism of more than 3,100 electric cooperative communicators and their affiliated organizations across the United States.
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association represents the national interests of the nation’s more than 900 cooperative electric utilities and the consumers they serve. NRECA coordinates the Council’s activities along with the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation, National Cooperative Services Corporation, National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative, and Federated Rural Electric Insurance Exchange.
