Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) is currently recruiting for a Staff Accountant to join our organization in Manassas, VA. This position is principally responsible for processing of in-house payroll for a staff of approximately 300, and also performs other general ledger tasks.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing monthly payroll and employee benefit journal entries and reconciling monthly group insurance invoices, and benefits accounting
  • Reconciling and posting 401(k) loan payments
  • Performing G/L account analysis, payroll reconciliation
  • Assisting with the monthly closing process and maintenance of the chart of accounts
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual federal and state payroll tax returns
  • Assisting with reconciling daily cash receipts including lockbox, ACH, cash and credit cards to appropriate bank accounts
  • Assisting with reconciling bank accounts
  • Coordinating and performing in-house payroll processing, using interfaced time entry and payroll software
  • Perform user testing for accounting software upgrades
  • Year-end payroll closing and processing, including W-2 production

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Three to five years of accounting experience and training, particularly in automated payroll processing and accounting, and also G/L accounting, is required, with Lawson software or similar (Oracle, SAP) experience strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated experience/knowledge in generally accepted accounting principals (GAAP) strongly desired.
  • The ideal candidate will:
  • Work independently with little supervision in a multi-task environment, as well as cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Display a record of reliability, maturity, accomplishment, good communication skills, and sound work ethic.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with automated mid-large company accounting software, general computer operation, Microsoft office applications.
  • Have considerable in-house automated payroll accounting and processing and general accounting experience.
  • Display experience with analytical techniques and financial reporting using computerized tools.
