Mistal and Young Join Biomass Project

NORTHERN VIRGINIA – The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, a partner in a proposed 49.9 megawatt electric generation biomass plant to be built in Halifax County, Va., announced the addition of two area residents to its project team.

According to Mike Dailey, NOVEC vice president, Business Development and Energy Services, Fred Mistal and Logan Young joined the team on January 21. Both men will serve as special consultants on the project. Mistal will focus on development and construction aspects of the project, while Young will concentrate on local public relations.

“Fred’s years of experience in power plant development and construction are a tremendous addition,” says Dailey. “He has managed the construction of many power plants in the course of his career, including the nearby Clover Power Station, a highly successful project in every sense of the word. Logan Young is well respected and connected in the local community. We regard him as the perfect liaison to maintain open communications with local governments and the public at large. The expertise of Mistal and Young will help to ensure the long-term success of the SBE project, and we are very excited to have both of them on board.”

The biomass project is currently awaiting final approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission. At a hearing on Feb. 1, South Boston officials and residents touted the value the biomass project will add to the community. The estimated $175 million project is expected to bring 300-400 construction jobs to the area, with 23-35 operational jobs and steady employment for a significant number of suppliers and haulers of waste forest products.

Green power from the plant is expected to meet about 6.5 percent of NOVEC‘s energy requirements when the project comes online in 2013.
