NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative awarded college scholarships amounting to $12,750 to nine students in Northern Virginia in May and June.
Independent committees selected the nine students from hundreds of seniors who applied. The committees looked for high academic achievement, community service, work experience, extracurricular activities, and demonstrated leadership qualities.
“The selection committees had a real challenge this year,” said Donna Snellings, NOVEC’s scholarship administrator. “All of the applicants had very impressive records, essays and recommendations from their schools.”
After the scholarship winners were selected, a separate committee reviewed all winners and selected the most outstanding student to receive the Garber Scholarship, named for NOVEC Board Chairman J. Manley Garber. This $1,500 scholarship, in conjunction with a $1,250 scholarship, totals $2,750. The Committee awarded the 2008 Garber Scholarship to William Moore, a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School in Prince William County.
NOVEC’s Dollars for Scholars program has helped approximately 100 students pay for college during the 25 years NOVEC has been a cooperative. Snellings said, “NOVEC is committed to helping the youth in our communities reach their education goals.”
