NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative and CortaniMorrison Public Relations and Advertising received a 2009 Silver Telly Award in June for a television advertisement they produced. The Co-op also won three Spotlight on Excellence awards in May from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and two Awards of Excellence in June from Communications Concepts’ Awards for Publication Excellence program.
The TV spot, Use It Wisely, promotes energy conservation as a little girl and her father check off energy-saving measures throughout their home. The measures include using compact fluorescent light bulbs, replacing the heating and cooling system filter, adjusting the thermostat, and remembering the obvious – turning off lights when leaving a room.
“The child as a hero of energy conservation grew out of a comment by NOVEC President/CEO Stan Feuerberg,” says Bob Morrison of CortaniMorrison. “He expressed the common complaint of many parents: children leaving lights and the TV on when leaving a room. We turned it around to have the child demonstrate how easy it is to implement energy saving ideas at home.”
The Use It Wisely campaign combines print, broadcast, outdoor, and Web advertising, plus distributed media releases and placed informational articles in an integrated strategy to encourage efficient energy use and electricity conservation, according to Inia Burginger, NOVEC’s communications manager.
According to the Web site, www.tellyawards.com/, the Telly awards honor “the very best” local, regional, and cable TV commercials, programs, and segments; video and film productions; and online videos, films and productions. For the 30th annual Telly Awards in 2009, advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, interactive agencies, and corporate video departments worldwide submitted more than 13,000 entries. A panel of more than 40 industry professionals judged the entries on their creativity and selected fewer than 10 percent of the entries for the Silver Telly Award.
NOVEC and CortaniMorrison’s winning TV ad, produced in 2008, can be viewed at CortaniMorrison’s Web site, www.cortanimorrison.com/sub/work.html.
Other 2009 Silver Telly winners include: Caudill and Associates for Johnson & Johnson and Neutrogena; The Oprah Winfrey Show; R2C for Chase, General Mills and other clients; Nickelodeon for DreamWorks; and TeamWorks Media for the Big Ten Conference. Additional winners will be added to the Telly Awards Web site in early July.
NOVEC previously won a Bronze Telly for its Power To Move You TV ad produced in 2000 by WJLA-TV.
NOVEC’s Public Relations division won three Spotlight on Excellence awards from the Council on Rural Electric Communicators and NRECA. LaTina Lewis and John Roy won the Award of Merit for Best Internal Newsletter, and Priscilla Knight won the Award of Merit for Best Feature Story. Knight shared the Award of Excellence for Best Special Publication with CortaniMorrison for NOVEC’s history booklet, 25 Powerful Years. The booklet also won the APEX Award of Excellence. Donna Snellings won an APEX Award of Excellence for her work organizing a community volunteer group of NOVEC employees called NOVEC Hands Engaged in Local Public Service, or NOVEC HELPS.
