NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative and the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives have awarded college scholarships amounting to $17,000 to 11 Northern Virginia high school students in Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties.

Independent committees selected nine students to receive NOVEC’s Dollars for Scholars from hundreds of seniors who applied. The committees looked for high academic achievement, community service, work experience, extracurricular activities, and demonstrated leadership.

After the first selection process, a separate committee reviewed all winners and selected the most outstanding student to receive the Garber Scholarship, named for NOVEC Board Vice Chairman J. Manley Garber. The $1,500 Garber scholarship, combined with the $1,500 scholarship, totals $3,000 for the recipient. The Committee awarded the 2009 Garber Scholarship to Elham Quraishi, a graduate of Manassas Park High School in Prince William County.

NOVEC’s Dollars for Scholars program has helped approximately 100 students pay for college in the last 26 years.
