NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative announced today it is nearing completion of a $4 million upgrade to its substation and distribution system to provide electric service to Power Loft @ Innovation, a 215,000-square-foot data center currently being built in Innovation Park in Prince William County, Virginia. When the system is completed this autumn, NOVEC will start delivering 50 megawatts of power at 34.5 kilovolts to Power Loft @ Innovation.
Jim Coakley, president of Power Loft LLC, said that while data centers require extraordinary amounts of electricity and cooling, Power Loft’s facility will accommodate three times the computing power of comparably sized facilities while reducing energy demand by 30 percent. Coakley said, “Over the past five years, the amount of kilowatts required to run one server-filled rack has increased ten times. Our response to this alarming trend is a design that saves enough electricity in one year to power approximately 12,300 homes.”
Power Loft had the building designed to meet Leadership in Environment and Energy Design Silver certification standards. To meet LEED standards and conserve energy, the 100,000-square-foot roof and all sides of the building will have plants growing on them.
Michael J. Dailey, NOVEC vice president of business development, said, “Power Loft and NOVEC have worked closely together over the past year to ensure that the critical power requirements of Power Loft’s customers will be fully met. We look forward to Power Loft coming online.”
Coakley said, “Among the many factors that drew us to Prince William County was NOVEC’s familiarity with mission critical facilities and their willingness to support the demands of this new, high-density design—both of which are critical to the success of this project.”
John Schofield, Prince William County Office of Economic Development, said, “We particularly appreciate their LEED certified design, which employs a green roof and a living ivy exterior skin that minimizes impact on the local watershed, and looks good.”
Power Loft is a privately held real estate development company headquartered in McLean, Virginia, that specializes in the development, management and ownership of high-density, high-security data centers, the first of which is under construction at Innovation Park.
