MANASSAS, VA—Stan Feuerberg, president and CEO of the Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC), told Northern Virginia legislators on December 14, 2006, that electricity demand from its customers has increased forty percent since 1999, with a 25 percent increase since 2004. He told legislators NOVEC will have to build more infrastructures to meet its members’ energy requirements in the near future. Feuerberg spoke at the Heritage Hunt Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, at a breakfast for legislators.
Feuerberg and members of NOVEC’s Board of Directors informed legislators that the power demand from Northern Virginia’s rapid growth is one of many reasons that NOVEC has become a leader in using state-of-the-art technology, such as fiber optics. “Our increased efficiency shows in the numbers: despite accelerating demand from our customers – now more than 135,000 -- NOVEC has not asked for a rate increase since 1991,” Feuerberg said. “We will return approximately $42 million this year to our customers through our Cash Back program, due to efficient operations. Compared to other utility services (water, gas, telephone, or cable television) we think we’ve done a better job of controlling expenses and informing our members of the reasons why energy prices have been so volatile.”
Other legislative issues NOVEC will monitor during the approaching 2007 Virginia Assembly session include electricity industry deregulation, eminent domain, and renewable sources of energy.
Attending the breakfast were Senators Charles Colgan, Mark Herring, and Jay O’Brien, Jr. Virginia Delegates who attended included Charles Caputo, David Marsden, Michele McQuigg, and David Poisson.
