MANASSAS, Va. – Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative is recognizing National Lineman Appreciation Day on April 18, 2014, to honor the hardworking men and women who work year-round, often in challenging conditions, to keep power on for customers.
“Electric line technicians deserve special recognition for the hard and dangerous work they do,” says Mason “Skip” Hollcroft, NOVEC construction manager. “They work all hours of the day and night, often during storms, to restore power when outages occur. We call them ‘storm soldiers.’”
Hollcroft noted how NOVEC line techs worked during this past winter – one of the coldest winters on record – to keep electricity flowing to Co-op members.
“Despite bitter polar vortexes, 54 inches of snow from December through March, and 50 mile-per-hour winds, our guys worked to keep lights and heat on for Co-op members. They worked so diligently year-round building and maintaining a sturdy power-distribution system that only two customers lost power during the big February 13 snowstorm. Our crews worked with snow in their faces to restore power to those customers in less than an hour.”
