Northern Virginia students win scholarships from NOVEC and its electric cooperative association

MANASSAS, Va. -- Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) and the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) recently awarded college and higher-education scholarships to 13 Northern Virginia high school seniors.

NOVEC Scholarships

NOVEC awarded $1,500 scholarships to 10 high school seniors after reviewing 115 applications. Judges reviewed applicants’ academic records, community involvement, work experience, recommendations, essays, and demonstrated leadership.

From the 10 students, judges selected the most outstanding student to receive the $1,500 J. Manley Garber scholarship, named for NOVEC’s emeritus board director. Erin Davisson, the Garber scholar, received a total of $3,000.

  6. Rylie Kiefaber -- Chantilly High School, Fairfax County
  7. Paul Smith -- Kettle Run High School, Fauquier County
  8. Hannah Woodling -- John Champe High School, Loudoun County
  9. Riya Maheshwari -- Rock Ridge High School, Loudoun County
  10. Juliana Calvert -- Mountain View High School, Stafford County

“We regret we couldn’t present our scholarships to the winners personally at school award assemblies, due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we wish these students all the best as they prepare for college,” said Lisa Hooker, NOVEC vice president of public relations.

VMDAEC Scholarships

The VMDAEC Educational Scholarship Foundation awarded $1,000 scholarships in April to 57 students who receive power from electric cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. The foundation selected recipients based on applicants’ financial need, academic achievement, and a personal statement. Scholarship winners plan to enter their first semester of college, technical or trade school this fall.
