NORTHERN VIRGINIA — Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative has selected five area high school students to participate in the 2012 National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Youth Tour. The students will join 1,500 other NRECA high school students from across the country to watch the national government in action from June 17 to 21. They will meet elected officials on Capitol Hill, and tour museums, monuments and historic sites during the all-expenses-paid tour.

U.S. Sen. Lyndon Baines Johnson inspired the Youth Tour when he addressed the 1957 National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Annual Meeting. The future president declared, "If one thing goes out of this meeting, it will be sending youngsters to the national capital where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents." The idea grew and NRECA began coordinating Youth Tour in 1964.
As part of the tour, the five students will go to Richmond in February 2013 to observe the General Assembly in session and meet elected officials.
