NOVEC Awards 12 Scholarships to College-Bound Students

MANASSAS, Va. Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) has awarded $1,500 scholarships to 12 high school seniors across its service territory. An independent panel of judges evaluated applicants based on academic records, community involvement, demonstrated leadership, and recommendations.

Jordan Fischer, graduate of Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School in Prince William County, received a scholarship designated for a student who will be attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Judged the most outstanding scholarship applicant, Fischer also received an additional $3,500 as the winner of the J. Manley Garber Scholarship. The award is named for the late NOVEC Board of Directors chairman. Fischer will attend Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.

TJ Brescia received a scholarship reserved for the dependent of a NOVEC employee; he also recently spent two weeks shadowing a NOVEC Communications Department staffer.

A scholarship was presented to Jaxson Elliott, of Halifax County High School in South Boston, where NOVEC operates its biomass electric generating facility.

  • Sophie Andreottola, Saint Paul VI Catholic High School; will be attending Elon University
  • TJ Brescia, Westfield High School; will be attending DePaul University
  • Shannon Charters, Centreville High School; will be attending University of Virginia
  • Devyn Telleen, Centreville High School; will be attending Haverford College

Fauquier County

  • Lula McCain, Kettle Run High School; will be attending James Madison University

Loudoun County

  • Jillian Ledbetter, John Champe High School; will be attending Virginia Tech
  • Grace Kestler, Loudoun Valley High School; will be attending Tulane University

City of Manassas Park

  • Keona Thomas, Osbourn Park High School; will be attending James Madison University

Prince William County

  • Maddie Barbee Doerfler, Battlefield High School; will be attending James Madison University
  • Jordan Fisher, Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School; will be attending Spellman College
  • Rania Lateef, Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School; will be attending Stanford University

Stafford County

  • Samantha Gaudio, Mountain View High School; will be attending Virginia Tech

 

Five Local Students Earn Co-op Association Scholarships

 

The Education Scholarship Foundation of the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) awarded $124,500 in college scholarships for the 2024-25 school year.

Thirty-three students, including five in NOVEC’s service territory, earned Worth Hudson Scholarships. The NOVEC students are:

  • Nicholas Cantos of Gainesville High School, awarded $2,500
  • Estiven Rosa-Garcia of Brentsville District High School in Nokesville, awarded $2,000
  • Maddie Barbee Doerfler of Battlefield High School in Haymarket, awarded $1,500
  • Eliana Bernarte of Gainesville High School, awarded $1,500
  • Tyler Francis of Patriot High School was awarded $1,500
