Electric Cooperatives Award Scholarships to Northern Virginia Students

NORTHERN VIRGINIA – The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative and the Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) has in recent weeks awarded 12 college scholarships to high school seniors in Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties and in the City of Manassas Park.

NOVEC Scholarship Winners
NOVEC’s selection committees chose ten scholarship winners from more than one hundred applicants based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community service, work experience, and demonstrated leadership qualities. They each received $1,500 scholarships.

After making their selections, the committees conducted a second review to select the most outstanding student. They awarded the $1,500 Garber Scholarship to Colleen Knight of Centreville. She just graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County. Knight’s scholarships total $3,000.

Scott Mattocks – Fairfax County, High School: Fairfax High School, Fairfax; GPA: 4.47; College: University of Virginia

Zachary Callaghan – Prince William County, High School: Battlefield High School, Haymarket; GPA: 4.7; College: Cornell University

Michelle Martin – Prince William County, High School: Battlefield High School, Haymarket; GPA: 4.48; College: University of Virginia

Sarah Rhodes – Fauquier County, High School: Kettle Run High School, Nokesville; GPA: 3.81; College: Lord Fairfax Community College

Gage Richert – Loudoun County, High School: Freedom High School, South Riding; GPA: 4.48; College: Georgia Institute of Technology

Ethan Burns – Stafford County, High School: Mountain View High School, Stafford; GPA: 3.7; College: Virginia Polytechnic Institute

Nathaniel Hoffa – City of Manassas Park, High School: Manassas Park High School; GPA: 3.78; College: George Mason University

William Baker – Private School, High School: Seton School, Manassas; GPA: 4.0; College: University of Notre Dame

Ryan Heltemes (NOVEC dependent), High School: Forest Park High School, Woodbridge; GPA: 3.82; College: Virginia Polytechnic Institute

VMDAEC Scholarship Winners
The VMDAEC Educational Scholarship Foundation has awarded 27 scholarships this year to students who receive power from electric cooperatives in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Recipients may use the $1,000 scholarships for tuition, fees, and books. Since its inception in 2000, the Foundation has awarded 289 scholarships totaling $198,500. The 2010 scholarship winners in NOVEC territory are:

Lisa Cox – Fairfax County, High School: Westfield High School, Chantilly; GPA: 4.07; College: The College of William & Mary

Veronica Sharpe – Prince William County, High School: Forest Park High School, Woodbridge; GPA: 3.7; College: James Madison University
