NOVEC reports approximately 20,000 customers without service at 11:30 a.m., the result of fierce thunderstorms that struck Northern Virginia late Friday night. Larry Shaffer, manager, system operations, notes that most of the damage was caused by broken or fallen trees – many of them healthy trees from outside maintained easements. There are also reports of broken poles and cross arms, as well. Damage is scattered throughout the NOVEC system, from Loudoun County to Stafford County. Customers should be prepared for a multi-day service restoration. Those with internet access can track restoration progress here: http://stormcenter.novec.com/index.cfm
NOVEC crews and contract crews have been in the field since the storm hit and will be working around the clock until all service is restored. Additional out-of- state crews are on their way to NVA. Safety is always a top priority for our employees and customers. Downed power lines and trees touching the lines are extremely dangerous and should never be touched. Downed power lines should be immediately reported by contacting NOVEC at 703-335-0500 or 1-888-335-0500.
A Verizon service outage is providing an additional challenge for area utilities, including NOVEC. All NOVEC line technicians and operations personnel are asked to report for work, as you may not receive a phone call.
