Crews continue to make progress with service restoration throughout the NOVEC system. Fierce thunderstorms that swept through the region at 10 p.m. on Friday night left 37,000 NOVEC customers without power. According to Larry Shaffer, manager, system operations, service has been restored to about half of them. At 2 p.m., the outage count had been reduced to 18,418. Shaffer says that most of the damage was caused by broken or fallen trees – many of them healthy trees from outside maintained easements. Crews have also found numerous broken poles and cross arms, as well. Damage is scattered throughout the NOVEC system, from Loudoun County to Stafford County. Customers still out of power should be prepared for a multi-day service restoration. Those with internet access can track restoration progress here: http://stormcenter.novec.com/index.cfm
Construction and tree crews have been in the field since the storm hit and will be working around the clock until all service is restored. Additional out-of- state crews are on their way to NVA to assist with service restoration.
Safety is always a top priority for our employees and customers. Downed power lines and trees touching the lines are extremely dangerous and should never be touched. Downed power lines should be immediately reported by contacting NOVEC at 703-335-0500 or toll free at 1-888-335-0500.
