Eight other Northern Virginia students place
MANASSAS, Va. — Hanlin Zhang, the 10-year-old daughter of Jing and Catherine Zhang of Vienna, Virginia, has earned “Best in Show” honors in Cooperative Living magazine’s 2017 Youth Art Contest.
The rising fifth grader at Vienna’s Flint Hill Elementary School used colored pencils to create her winning entry of a Dalmatian puppy. Cooperative Living features a photo of Zhang and her drawing on the July magazine cover.
For the 15th annual contest, open to kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Virginia and part of Tennessee, young artists were asked to illustrate something about “animals.” More than 425 students entered the competition. Nine of the 19 winners, including, Zhang, live in Northern Virginia, where Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) provides electricity.
“We received drawings of everything from butterflies to elephants,” said Bill Sherrod, Cooperative Living’s editor. “All the judges were impressed with the tremendous imagination and talent shown in the students’ art.”
“My art teacher asked me to look through a folder of images and pick something that would inspire my art,” Zhang explained. “I chose the Dalmatian because I thought it was cute.”
Zhang’s “Best in Show” work earned her a $100 prize.
“We started the Youth Art Contest to encourage youthful creativity and give kids a chance to show their art to the magazine’s 1.25 million readers,” Sherrod said. “We invite everyone to see Hanlin’s picture, along with the first-, second-, and third-place winners’ art in in our July Cooperative Living magazine and online at www.co-opliving.com.”
