Search and Rescue Dogs and Charities Will Benefit
NORTHERN VIRGINIA – To honor the nation’s service men and women and raise money for Wounded Warriors and other charitable organizations, Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative employees will hold Family Fun Day with Pinewood Car Derby on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at NOVEC’s Gainesville Technical Center located at 5399 Wellington Branch Dr., Gainesville, VA, 20155. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, Sept. 18.
NOVEC HELPS (Hands Engaged in Local Public Service), a group of NOVEC employees who volunteer in the community, is raising money for several non-profit organizations. In addition to the Wounded Warriors Association, funds raised will go to: the Virginia Search and Rescue Dog Association; March of Dimes; American Cancer Association; American Diabetes Association; Susan G. Komen for the Cure; and Hospice.
“NOVEC HELPS volunteers have walked, sung, sawed, cooked, and drilled in the last year to help people in our community live longer, happier lives,” says Ginger Hamlin, HELPS secretary. “Whether it’s building handicap ramps for elderly homeowners or cooking meals for the homeless, HELPS volunteers keep busy. Family Fun Day is just one more way we are giving back to the community.”
Hamlin encourages families and individuals to come participate: “We’re planning a great day of fun for everyone.”
Pinewood Car Derby
“You don’t have to be a Cub Scout to love racing pinewood derby cars,” says Ed Shifflet, who works in NOVEC’s field operation department. “The first 250 cars registered by Sept. 7 will compete. We’re giving prizes for the fastest cars in various categories.”
- Weigh-in for cars will begin at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11.
- Cash entry fee: $5
- All cars must be Boy Scout approved. Participants may bring their own cars or purchase kits for $5 cash at these NOVEC offices:

Food and Activities
Food from Chick-fil-A, Uno’s Pizza, Snowie Snow Cones, and Good Humor Ice Cream will be on sale.
There is no charge to attend the event, but attendees may donate to Family Fun Day charities and organizations when participating in the following activities:
- Moon bounce
- Dunk tank
- Arts and crafts
- Pole-climbing demonstrations
- NOVEC bucket truck demonstrations
- Gainesville Fire Department fire truck display
- Search and Rescue dogs demonstrations
- Ident-A-Kid
- Old Dominion race car display
- Seated massages
Audio Solutions in Woodbridge, Va., will donate sound equipment. Michael Harper, sound engineer for the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” will volunteer his time and skills.
