NORTHERN VIRGINIA – Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative members elected C.W. (Skip) Albrite, Jr. to serve on the NOVEC board of directors at NOVEC’s annual meeting on September 18 at Battlefield High School in Haymarket, Va. Albrite, a self-employed businessman, will represent Co-op members who live in District 8, which includes southern Prince William County, Stafford County, and Fauquier County. Albrite fills the vacancy created by Walter Grove, who retired from the board in February 2013 after serving as a director for more than 38 years.
NOVEC members also re-elected incumbent directors Jim Chesley of Clifton and Michael Ragan of Manassas. They ran unopposed. Chesley and Ragan, along with Albrite, will serve four-year terms on the board.
Approximately 1,000 members, guests, and employees attended the Co-op’s 30th annual meeting. After enjoying a spaghetti dinner prepared by Battlefield High School parents, and a performance by the New Dominion Choraliers, members heard reports from Dexter Odin, board counsel; Wade House, board chairman; and Stan Feuerberg, president and CEO.
Feuerberg reported that NOVEC continues to hold onto its record as the most reliable electric utility among seven utilities in the Washington, D.C., region and one of the highest-ranked electric utilities in the nation in customer satisfaction. He noted major power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy on Oct. 29, 2012, and Snowstorm Saturn in March 2013.
“Our goal is to be the most reliable electric utility in the region, and to be ranked among the most reliable systems in the nation,” Feuerberg said. “However, our power-distribution system, which is designed to be more robust than typical utility standards provide, cannot completely withstand all the forces of nature. We take pride in restoring power safely to our customers before neighboring systems finish up when storms occur.”
Feuerberg noted that NOVEC has grown from serving 38,000 customers in 1983 to more than 153,000 in 2013. He reported that the Co-op’s first power-generation plant – a “green” wood biomass plant in Halifax County – is on schedule to begin generating electricity for NOVEC customers later this year.
