NOVEC and VMDAEC Offer Scholarships

NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative and the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives are accepting applications from Northern Virginia high school seniors for higher-education scholarships.

NOVEC's Dollars for Scholars Program

The NOVEC Dollars for Scholars selection committees will award $1,500 scholarships to qualifying high school students in NOVEC's service territory: Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties and the City of Manassas Park. The selection committees will award an additional $1,500 scholarship to a student in NOVEC's service territory who either attends private school or is home-schooled.

From the scholarship winners, the committees will select the overall outstanding student for the $1,500 J. Manley Garber Scholarship.The winner of this scholarship will therefore receive a total of $3,000.

Each county's selection committee will look for students who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, community service, work experience, and leadership skills.

A scholarship applicant must:

1.Be a college-bound high school senior whose parents or guardians currently receive electric service from NOVEC

2.Have at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and submit an official transcript that includes first-semester grades

3.Submit Student Achievement Test (SAT) scores

4.Demonstrate a wide range of participation and leadership in extracurricular activities, community service and/or work experience

5.Submit two letters of recommendation – one from a high school official, such as a teacher or counselor, and one from a community member

6.Submit a 400-word typed essay – directions are included with the application form

Failure to submit a complete package by March 23 will disqualify a student from consideration.

NOVEC representatives will present scholarships at pre-graduation ceremonies at the schools of selected students. The August edition of Cooperative Living magazine and NOVEC's website will list the names of all scholarship recipients.

VMDAEC Scholarships

High school seniors whose parents or guardians are electric cooperative customer-owners are eligible to apply for 2012 educational scholarships, which will be awarded by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives Educational Scholarship Foundation.An applicant must be entering a post-high-school educational institution as a freshman in autumn 2012.

The foundation will award $500 and $1,000 scholarships to students who have been selected based on financial need, academic achievement, and a personal statement. VMDAEC will send scholarship funds directly to a recipient's chosen educational institution for help with tuition, fees, and books.

The VMDAEC Educational Scholarship Foundation Board has awarded 319 scholarships totaling $228,500 to students in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware since 2000. The Foundation is funded through tax-deductible donations from individuals and VMDAEC member electric cooperatives, and from the proceeds from fundraising events.
